Toby – Life with a new puppy

Formally known as Red Mallow Pepper – A Hungarian Vizsla

Who is Toby?

Hello everyone,

Toby is our new puppy (FEB 2008). He is an Hungarian Vizsla. We looked at 150 different breeds before finally settling on a Vizsla. We needed a dog that would not go wandering off and disappear for ages (that was all terriers out of the question).

He had to be big enough so that we could find him (that was all small dogs out of the question).

He had to be “manly” (that was all poodles and the like off the list -. This means those girly french poodles who shave there legs – not Californian Lucy who is the most adorable poodle to walk this earth!! ) – and not as common as muck (that was all labradors off the list).

Our previous dog was a Dalmatian and he was so beautiful and well behaved (ish) that we did not want to spend months comparing the new dog with the old one (Oscar may be gone, but will never be forgotten see his page for pic).

If you wish to contact me them drop me an email

The Hungarian Vizsla – fit the bill.

February 2010

The lovely Toby is now 2 years old.  Here are a couple of pictures..

Next job was to try and find one – not that easy. We wanted a puppy in March/April 2008 so the hunt was on. Many phone calls and web searches later we found a chap called David Mallows near Swindon (UK) who had a litter of pups – born 1st Jan 2008 – we drove to Swindon and found 11 puppies all clammering for our attention. 3 boys were left so we had to choose one.

That was the tricky bit – could we fit 3 boys into our life…. reality check – no. One was chosen and we called him Toby – much debate over a couple of weeks coming up with a suitable name!

So this is how we coped with him from day one to present……

    Hello Rocket’s mom,

I am pleasantly surprised by everyone’s lovely comments and warm welcome. I will have questions aplenty! Thanks for your support and will be posting our latest adventures soon. He is doing well with walking on his lead, but still biting like crazy – i am covered in war wounds.
PS: Does anyone else agree with me that Vizsla look like Scooby Doo – Toby looks like Scrappy Doo to me 🙂

    Sue and girls: http://www.dogpage.us/hungarian-vizsla.htm
A beautiful bone structure and intelligent, eager nature; active, energetic and athletic; loyal and affectionate; level personality — and comes with a gleaming russet coat. What more could a girl want! Toby is definitely a ‘catch.’ Take good care of that boy…

Love your blog! it’s great to see Toby’s progression (and yours :)).
My dog, Daisy (a Labrador Retriever) has a Vizsla friend that lives next door. Her name is Rainy and she’s an absolutely wonderful dog. Toby seems just as wonderful.

Your blog is simply lovely. I currently have a 5 month male Vizsla. I wish I found your site in the first few weeks to help me get through that time!!! It was hard hard hard. Things improving now finally. Eating sheep, deer, horse, rabbit poo too! I am sorry to read you had to re-home beautiful Toby but I am sure he is loving his new family. Thank you for your inspiring blogging. A wonderful way to remember and share Toby. xxx

he will improve and it will all be worth while. Just doesn’t feel like it at the time. Toby was such hard work and so wilful. love him to bits though.

and wound up here Toby – Life with a new puppy. And I
do have a couple of questions for you if
you don’t mind. Could it be simply me or does it look as if like some of these comments appear as if they are coming from brain dead folks? 😛 And, if you are posting on additional online sites, I would like to keep up with anything new you have to post. Could you list of all of all your social sites like your Facebook page, twitter feed, or linkedin profile?

      Hi there,

Firstly, thank you for taking the time to read and comment on this blog.

I think that if someone takes the time to read and comment then that’s fine by me!!

This is a “standalone” blog and was a way of recording all the changes that were taking place at the time.

I have other “projects” and websites and Facebook and LinkedIn etc, but they are totally separate from this blog and I didn’t think it was appropriate to list those on this site . I am not trying to raise my profile, sell anything, or change anyone opinions on anything.

This was more for me than the rest of the world and anyone reading this is not interested in my LinkedIn profile about computers, project managers and charities etc. The readers of this are also not interested in my thoughts on wind farms either (www.frawt.org.uk) and my ramblings on twitter are few and far between and are mostly. Rants against mobile phone companies and airlines. 🙂

That is why I left them off.

This blog seems to make people happy and they all love there dogs!!!

I’m looking for a dog, and the Vizsla seems to fit the bill. Only one question hasn’t yet been addressed by the sites that I’ve visited. I need a dog that will alert me to strange goings-on around my property. It doesn’t need to be aggressive to strange people/animals, but I do need it to bark if there’s something that troubles it. Would a Vizsla do this?

    • Admin said

      Hi there,

My Vizsla certainly barked at anyone who came to the doo. To be honest, i think you could train any dog to do that. Its just a question of finding a really good trainer

Hmm it appears like your website ate my first comment (it was extremely long) so I guess I’ll just sum it up what I had written and say, I’m thoroughly enjoying your blog. I as well am an aspiring blog blogger but I’m still new to the whole thing. Do you have any tips for first-time blog writers? I’d genuinely appreciate it.|

    • Admin said

Glad you enjoy it. I have several other blogs. I don’t really have much advice. I just write what I think and my only intention wad to record his life and it was more for me than anyone else lol. Sorry your first comment vanished
